Jember, the City of Tobacco and World-Class Carnival

Jember is a regency in East Java Province, located about 200 kilometers southeast of Surabaya. The region is widely known as one of Indonesia's leading tobacco producers and is also recognized internationally as a hub of art and cultural festivals.

The City of Tobacco

Since the colonial era, Jember has earned the nickname "The City of Tobacco" thanks to its high-quality crops. Jember's tobacco has long been exported to various countries, supplying both cigarette and cigar industries. Even today, agriculture and plantations remain the backbone of Jember's economy, with tobacco at its center.

Jember Fashion Carnaval (JFC)

Beyond its agricultural fame, Jember has gained global recognition through the Jember Fashion Carnaval (JFC), an annual street carnival held in the heart of the city. JFC is considered one of the largest carnivals in the world, after those in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Notting Hill (United Kingdom). Each year, thousands of participants showcase spectacular costumes that combine traditional, cultural, and modern elements, making Jember a symbol of Indonesia's creative tourism.

Natural and Cultural Attractions

Jember is blessed with breathtaking natural beauty, offering a wide range of destinations for visitors:

  • Papuma Beach and Watu Ulo Beach, famous for their exotic Indian Ocean views.

  • Payangan Beach, known for its dramatic hills and scenic bays.

  • Meru Betiri National Park, a conservation area home to rare wildlife such as sea turtles and the Javan leopard.

  • Gunung Gambir Tea Plantation and the Argopuro Mountains, offering cool air and lush green landscapes.

In addition to natural beauty, Jember also preserves unique cultural traditions, such as the Rebo Wekasan ritual and various local performing arts that remain part of community life.

Education and Student City

Jember is also recognized as an education hub in East Java, highlighted by the presence of University of Jember (UNEJ), a major state university that attracts students from across the region. This academic presence has strengthened Jember's role as a vibrant and growing city.

With its rich natural resources, cultural heritage, and creative achievements, Jember today stands not only as a city of tobacco, but also as a center of culture, tourism, and education in East Java.
